Ancients of the Past

Part 7

Bra'tac looked around at the Jaffa that followed him.  He knew that most wanted to attack the Goa'uld and not what he was putting in front of them right now.  But looking around he could see several who had the fire to strike back at those who had attacked them.  When he had first told them about the plan several balked at such a thing until he told them they would be striking back at those who had attacked them.

Now he had a group who were willing to fight back at the group called the Cylons.  He knew that they would not be in command of the ship, but his men were warriors who would do their job.  A couple were not sure about everything and there was still some tension between the Jaffa and the Tau'ri.  But many were willing to give the Tau'ri some doubt for their willingness to help out.

Bra'tac was glad that the To'kra was not involved.  If they were he feared that his men would not help out.  The relationship between the two groups was strained to the point where he was not sure they would ever get along again.  Bra'tac seemed to be about the only Jaffa beside Teal'c who understood that to finally defeat the Goa'uld they would need the help of the To'kra and the Tau'ri.

Bra'tac looked at his volunteers and hoped that there would be enough.  The rest of his men were heading to the Tau'ri's other base of operations where they could be housed easier.  They were still looking for another base of operations and with everything that seemed to be happening it was a logical choice.

"Bra'tac, how's it going," Jack said walking up next to him.

"Quite well O’Neill," Bra'tac replied.  "There is still much to do if we are to function with the Colonials but I think we can do it."

"That's good news," Jack replied.  He was still waiting for word from the President to see if he had permission to undertake such a mission.

"Do you think your President will allow such a mission O’Neill," Bra'tac asked.  He had the feeling that this mission would require everyone's help, even the To’kra.

"I think he will, though it might take a bit longer to gather some volunteers," Jack said with a bit of confidence.  The President was not like the Vice President in that he was a bit more willing to understand the bigger picture.  "Are these the volunteers," Jack asked switching the subject to the group of Jaffa standing in the gate room.

"Yes, they were the first to volunteer and I am proud of them," Bra'tac said loud enough to be overheard by the group.  Jack thought he saw a few of them swell with pride that Bra'tac had said that.

Jonas was worried about Erin.  She had not been herself since they had gone shopping.  He had seen her talking with another man and the conversation had not been a pleasant one by the look on her face.  He walked over to see where everyone was.  Aphrodite was now working on looking through the human legends and myths to see if anything remained about the Galactica or its flight to Earth.  Erin had gone to the kitchen to fix them some lunch.

"How's it going Aphrodite," he asked her as he walked into the room.  He decided not to confront Erin just yet as he needed more to go on this just a conversation at the store.  It might have just been an ex-lover or something.

"Slowly, it seems that the Goa'uld stripped everything that was not there's," Aphrodite replied looking up from what she was reading.

"It seems that way.  I've been thinking about all of the legends and gods that my people have passed down the generations and I can't think of any that would be related to all of this," Jonas told her.

"If there is anything there it will be obscure and most certainly a myth by now," Aphrodite replied.  "I'm not even sure that it would be recognizable anymore."

"You're saying that the storyline could have changed that much," Jonas asked.

"Or more," Aphrodite replied.

"Then this will be a tough search," Jonas said as the small woman went back to work.  Jonas tried to concentrate on the words in front of him but kept finding himself looking over to the young woman.  He knew that in ancient Earth time that the name Aphrodite meant Goddess of Love and that her beauty was breathtaking.  If that was the case then the woman name fit her well.

"Well, I hope you have good news today," VP said from behind his desk.

"Yes I do," the man replied.  "We have found out that the ship, Galactica, was taken by the group called the Colonials.  From other sources we have learned that they are going to be manning it but do not have enough manpower.  They have asked us for help with that."

"Really, then we should keep our eyes open for this opportunity.  That ship would end all of our problems," VP said leaning back in his chair and smiled.

"Yes sir," the man said.  "Shall I tell the others as well?"

"Not just yet.  They are usually too impatient and the reason why we keep getting caught," VP replied.  "I'll see about getting some of our men on board the Galactica, then we can make up a plan."

"Of course," the man replied then was dismissed.  He was not sure that they could trust the VP anymore and quickly left the building.  He had others he needed to see right away.

Apollo watched as a group of armored men came though the gate.  There were similar to the ones who had come though and attacked them not that long ago.  He had learned much since then.  His people did not know much about what had happened in the galaxy compared to what was happening outside it.  They had been fighting the Cylons for so long that nothing else mattered.

Apollo wondered about this group, the Goa'uld and why they had never conquered his planet.  Perhaps they had not known about them or the Cylons had already been attacking their planet so they never tried.  It was just too many questions right now for him to answer.

"Greetings Apollo," the Jaffa known as Teal'c said approaching Apollo.

"Teal'c," Apollo replied to the Jaffa.  "Are these the volunteers?"

"Indeed," Teal'c replied.  "They will do their duties as needed."

"I'm sure they will," Apollo said.   He noticed that they had about sixty Jaffa who had volunteered.  He hoped that they had some experience in handling equipment.  A few of them might even have had experience flying fighter type craft.  Perhaps that was the first thing to do.  "How many of you have experience flying?"

About six Jaffa stepped forward including Teal'c.  That would mean a few more pilots.  Right now he needed more than just six.  Apollo made a mental note to talk with General O’Neill about that and see if they had any volunteers with flight experience.

"You six, go with Ares here and he will begin teaching you how to fly a viper.  It will probably be a bit different from anything else you've flow but I'm confident in your abilities," Apollo said.  Everything he had heard about the Jaffa meant that they were not that wise in real technical things but were eager to learn.  He would put that to use here.

Apollo then began to split the rest of the group up into different area according to skill that each man had.  He knew one of the first things to go was the metal uniforms that they wore.  The pilots especially would be wearing something different if they were to be comfortable in the vipers.

Ares surveyed the group in front of him.  He had twenty of his own men who could fly and now an additional six.  He hoped that the people of Earth could supply more.  Each of the men in front of him said they had experience flying small ships in space.

It was then that General Hammond came walking up to where he was standing.  Ares hoped that the man did not have bad new for him.

"How many more pilots do you need," the man asked him.

"We only have about twenty-five right here.  We need about fifty more," Ares said honestly.

"Fifty, I think we might be able to manage that," Hammond said then walked over to where Apollo was to talk with him.

"All right, we're going to be headed up to the Galactica where you'll be flying a fighter called the viper.  These might be a bit different then you're used to so we'll go slowly until you get the hang of them.  The viper is a multi environment fighter designed for space superiority," Ares told the group in front of him.  He was not sure how much difference there would be between the fighters they flew compared to a legendary viper.  "Once on board you'll be given quarters and a uniform.  To comrade in arms, the Jaffa, I might recommend wearing them.  You'll feel more comfortable in them."

"But we've always worn this into battle," one of the members said.

"We will," Teal'c replied.  "It is sometimes better to heed advice when it is given."

"But this is tradition," the man replied to Teal'c.

"Tradition based on the Goa'uld, false gods.  It is time we establish our own," Teal'c said.  "And I have to agree with Ares on this.  Our armor doesn't allow us the flexibility that we might need in their fighters."

Ares watched the verbal battle in front of him and realized that they did have a strong code of honor.  They were warriors pure and simple and their leader was Teal'c.  He would wait to see how they did in a viper and then take it from there.

Jack listened as Hammond gave his request for what type of people they would need to finish the compliment of the Galactica.  So far there were a lot of people for one operation and he wondered how the President would handle this.  He was also still worried about the vice president.  Ever since his brief stop he had Jack worried.  The man seemed to have his hands in just about everything and if he was not in control of it then he wanted to shut it down regardless of the consequences that it might have to the planet.

"General, I'll let the president know about the numbers and then he'll have to decide how many to sent," Jack told his friend.

"All right Jack," Hammond said.  "Tell him I say hello as well and that the Prometheus arrived just a short time ago."

"I will," Jack said as they signed off and the stargate shutdown.  Jack went over all the troops that would be needed and wondered what they would be doing.  The request for fifty pilots caught him by surprise.  He had just assumed that they would have their own pilots but he was obviously wrong on this part.

He sent off the request to the president then walked over to find Sam and Daniel.  He had no report from Jonas yet and assumed that they had settled into a routine over there at Erin's house.  He hoped that they would be able to find something to help them out with this one.  If the threat was a large as the Colonials said then it could infiltrate the entire galaxy.

"Jack," he heard Daniel's voice say from the other side of the room.  He walked over to see what his friend had to say.  "The first of the volunteers are ready."

"Ah, good," Jack said.  "Send them though and go on ahead and go with them.  I'm still waiting on the President's approval for the rest of the men."

"Are you sure," Daniel asked wanting to make sure.

"Yeah, I'll send Sam over a bit later with the next group," Jack told him.

"All right," Daniel replied walking out of the room and back to where the recruits were standing.

A sharply dressed man came walking into the room that had several other in it already.  The man behind the desk noticed who had walked in and quickly told everyone to leave him alone for a few minutes.  There was some grumbling but finally everyone left the room except for him and the other man.

"I hope that there is a reason for this interruption in my schedule," the man behind the desk said.

"But of course," the other man said.  "It's been done.  We no longer have a reason to keep them around."

"then do what you have to," the man behind the desk said.  "Just make sure that it can't be traced back to me."

"Very well," the man said then left motioning the others that they could come back in.

"General," Samantha said walking up to General Hammond.  She had come though the gate with the first of the new recruits and was reporting in to the general.

"Colonel," Hammond replied seeing one of his friends.  He had seen the recruits come in though the gate and making his way over to where Apollo and Ares had their command post set up.

"The first batch of recruits are here, but I have a warning from Jack," Sam said motioning him off to the side.

"Why don't I like the sound of this," Hammond said knowing that there might be something else going on.

"Stargate command had received a visit from the Vice-President not long before all of this happened," Sam said knowing that the general would know what the unspoken words were.

"Let me guess, you haven't heard anything from him since," Hammond asked seeing Sam nod her head.  That was not good news for any of them.  Every time the man showed up it meant trouble for the stargate program.

"No sir," Sam answered knowing that Hammond knew more about the Vice-President then she did.  She wondered how many times he had to work with the man during time of commanding the stargate program.

"I'll keep my eyes open, thank you," Hammond said.

"Good," Sam said.  No one in stargate command likes the present Vice-President of the United States.  He had his own agenda and was usually associated with a group that wanted to take over the stargate.  Sam wondered if the man really understood the true danger that their enemies presented to them, or if they just saw the amount of money they could make.

Sam turned to make her way to where Daniel was standing when two figures blocked her path.  Sam was not concerned as she recognized Athena and Artemis.

""I was just wondering if Aphrodite has uncovered anything yet," Athena asked Sam.

"I haven't heard anything yet," Sam replied to the two women.  "I would think that if something had occurred or happened that one of them would say something to us."

"That's good news, I guess, but not what I was asking," Athena replied as the two of the steered Sam to a more private place.

Sam was curious what they were talking about.  The two women seemed to be a bit concerned about something but she could only hope they would give her more hints.

"We were actually wondering if she was all right," Artemis said.

"Our sister is quite naïve about a lot of things," Athena said hoping to give Sam more information.

"She appeared to know what she was doing to me," Sam said.

"Well, it’s not about what she knows, more like how she affects others," Athena explained.  "She doesn't realize that she has most men wanting to walk in her shadow just for the honor of it."

"Ah, I see," Sam said as some realization struck her.  "Last I heard they were doing just fine.  Do you want us to increase security around her?"

"No, she would just get mad at us," Artemis said hastily giving Sam a clue that the two of them had probably watched Aphrodite's back for quite some time now.

"So does she know that you two do this," Sam asked with a bit of curiosity.

Athena and Artemis looked at each other for a second before they replied.  "She found out once," Artemis said.

"Boy that was not pretty," Athena said remembering what her little sister had said to them.

"Yeah, but that guy was a real creep," Artemis replied as if to defend themselves with that argument.

There was a moment of silence as Athena and Artemis thought about that day.  It had been a long time that was for sure.  Now here they were far from home with the Cylons about to overrun the galaxy and the only ones left to stop them were those who survived and a few allies, and the Galactica.

Shuttles lifted from the ground and headed towards the large ship that was floating in space above the planet.  The Galactica was something that most people had never seen before.  It was different from the Goa'uld ships in that this Galactica was entirely made for war and combat.  There was nothing else about it.

The shuttle landed in one of the hanger bays to unload its passengers.  A group got out of the shuttle and lead to their temporary quarters.  There were a lot of different things that could happen and no one was sure what was going to happen.  Teal'c looked around the ship as he walked out of the shuttle.  This was going to be different for everyone involved.  This ship was not Goa'uld in design that was for sure.  It resembled more of the Tau’ri in design.  To him it felt a lot like the Prometheus in design and feel than any Goa'uld ship he had ever been on.

He followed the guide in front of him as they were lead to what would be their quarters while they were on the ship.  Teal'c also had the feeling that this ship would have influenced the Asgard as well in design.  Everything had a clean appearance to it without any of the flash that a Goa'uld ship might have.

"Well this will be different," one of the Jaffa said as they walked down the corridor.

"Indeed," Teal'c replied.  He had that same thought as they walked along.  There was going to be a lot to learn for all of them but they did all have combat experience against.

"Here you are," the person said showing them a barracks that would house all of them.  "It would be to your advantage to grab your bunk now or you may not get the one you want."

"We will," Teal'c said for the group.

"All right, Apollo has asked for all pilots to meet on the hanger bay in one hour.  That should give you enough time to settle down and put your things away.  There are uniforms over there in the closet," he said pointing to a closet along the wall.  "You'll find the uniforms to be much more comfortable than what you are wearing in the vipers."

Teal'c watched as the man left then went to claim a bunk.  He wondered again for about the hundredth time how this would change everything that he new.

Two Goa’uld ships patrolled around a planet of their god.  There had been news that a new race had appeared and for all ships to be in their guard.  The crew was not that worried about what was going on.  They were sure that their god would help them and know what to do.

"My lord," one of the Jaffa said to the captain of the ship.

"Report," the captain said.

"We are tracking a large ship approaching the planet.  It should be here in one hour," the Jaffa said.

"It must be the new race," the captain said.  "Prepare for battle.  We'll show them what true Jaffa warrior can do."

"Yes sir," the reply came and he left to carry out his orders.

The Jaffa prepared for battle against this new threat.  It was one that they knew that the renegade Jaffa and the Tau'ri were preparing to battle against.  The Goa'uld did not feel like they need their help against this new enemy.  The fighters were launched from the Goa'uld ships as the enemy approached.

The enemy ships looked like two large saucers stacked on top of each other steadily approached the Goa'uld ships.  There were two such large capital ships approaching the Goa'uld planet.  Suddenly a large number of saucer shaped fighter craft emerged from the larger ships.  The Goa'uld fighters were easily overwhelmed by the sheer numbers that the attackers came at them with.

"Captain, we're outnumbered and the enemy is very strong," the Jaffa said to his captain.

"Apophasis does not tolerate failure," the captain said.  "Send a signal to the planet to let them know what is going on."

"Yes sir," the Jaffa replied sending the message to the planet to let them know how the battle above was faring.

The signal was barely sent when the enemy ships opened fire on the Goa'uld ships.  The captain ordered them to return fire as the ships exchanged fire in space.  The Goa'uld ships did not appear to be causing any damage on the enemy ships but their own ships were taking heavy damage.

"Captain, shields are down, we won't survive another hit," the operator said.

The words were barely out of his mouth when the next volley of shots impacted the Goa'uld ship.  The damage was beyond what the ship had the ability to hold and exploded.  The second ship followed moments later leaving the planet's surface undefended.

Bra'tac was standing watching his warriors undergo their training when a report came that the stargate had activated.  A messenger was coming in for Bra'tac.  He walked over to see one of his informants coming over to where he was.

"Master Bra'tac," he said with a bow to the older man.

"What news Gerad," Bra'tac asked the man.  He was one of his informants for Apophasis.

"A new enemy attacked Tun'lin a short time ago.  The small fleet that protected the planet was destroyed," Gerad said.

"What does Apophasis do about this attack," Bra'tac asked wondering how Apophasis would handle such a thing.

"Nothing so far.  All reports state that he is just sitting there," the reply came.

Bra'tac stood for several minutes thinking about what he had just been told.  He knew that Apophasis would probably try to retaliate in some way.  The question was how he would react to such a new threat.  He knew that Apophasis would not take such a defeat lightly so why was he not doing anything to stop them.  He decided that the only they would be able to do was wait and see with Apophasis.

"How are our warriors adapting to their new roles," Bra'tac asked instead.

"Everyone is doing fine, working hard to gain the knowledge to excel at their positions," the man replied.

"Excellent, let us see to it that we live up to our word as warriors," Bra'tac said.

Thor sat in the council of the Asgard chamber listening while they talked about what to do with everything that was going on.  Thor was not sure that they were headed in the right direction about this.  He was also sure that the council was overlooking the threat that this new group might bring.

"Thor what do you think about all of this.  You are the one who has had the most contact with the humans," one of the council members asked.

"The humans that I have talked to are honorable, like O'Neill.  I see no reason why they would think about going against us in any way.  O'Neill is rash but usually has good judgment.  I think we might be overlooking the threat to the Asgard," Thor said.

"Nonsense," another member said.  "We all know that the humans should not be trusted.  This is just another reason for such a thing."

"I think we should convene for now," another member said.  She was one of the oldest among their species.  "We need to think about this with level heads."

The council convened and Thor walked out wondering what was happening with the council lately.  It seemed that they thought they knew everything when in fact they knew very little.  They were treating this threat with little of no concern.  He had reports of this enemy encroaching all over the galaxy and it would only be a matter of time before they came to an Asgard world.

"Thor, can I speak with you," a female voice said making Thor turn.  There standing in front of him was Gaia.  She was the oldest one among them.

"Of course Gaia, what can I do for you," Thor asked with respect.  There was always something different about Gaia that no one could really explain.

"Walk with me for awhile, the council can wait," Gaia said as they began to walk.

They walked in silence for a while and Thor was beginning to wonder where they were going.  They were now a bit away from the rest of the group.  In a small secluded area they finally came to a stop.

"A friend of mine says that we do not think much about the new threat that is facing the humans and Goa'uld," Gaia said.

"No, they do not," Thor said.

"Then they are foolish," another voice said causing Thor to turn around.  A male human was standing there and Thor was wondering where he had come from.

"Tagas, this is Thor," Gaia said not surprised in the least of what had just happened.

"It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person Thor, Gaia holds you in high regards," Tegas said.

Thor took a minute to look at Tagus.  There was something about him that was different than anything else.  It was then that he realized who Tagus was.

"You are an Ancient," Thor said.

"Yes, we have been gone a long time yet we have not been gone at all," Tagus said to Thor.

"I see, but why are you here now," Thor said.

"The threat to the galaxy is very real.  In the past our two races enjoyed a close relationship," Tagus said.  "It is for that reason why I came here to warn you.  It goes against our policy but there is a greater danger now."

Thor was not sure if he knew exactly what Tagus meant about that.  There was something up that was for sure.  The Ancients were not known for their straightforwardness that was for sure.

"I will try to make the council see," Thor said.  "But why don't you get involved again."

"It is not our way anymore," Tagus said then disappeared.

"You knew," Thor asked Gaia after a few minutes of silence.

"Yes, I still talk regularly with the Ancients.  I still have friends among them," Gaia said.  "I was the last to remember them when they walked among us before they ascended beyond this plane.  We took a different path then they did and in the long run I think neither of us were right."

Thor did not say much but he did reflect on what he had been told.  The Ancients were now being of pure energy who could do tremendous things.  But if they were mindful of this new threat to the Galaxy then the Asgard should be as well.
