Chapter 10

Greg practically ran to Admiral Jack Cave's office with the message in his hand.  He ran in to the office and just caught Jack and Steve before they were about to go out for lunch.

"Admiral sir!"  Greg huffed a bit as he handed the message to Jack.  "This just came in."

Jack glanced at the message then handed it over to Steve for him to read also.

"Well that answers part of our questions."  Steve said as Jack was writing down the orders to be carried out.

"Get this to Vice Admiral Dinen, tell him to go at once."  Jack told Greg and watched as he ran out the door.  "Well, it looks like the Skartians are involved."

"In a way it makes me feel a bit better" Steve said.

"I know what you mean, now the question becomes is this the only Skartian, or are there more?"  Jack said.

"I guess we just will have to wait and see."  Steve said.  "I just hope they reach Ahmed's parents in time."

"They should, the teams been assembled and in the area for a while now just waiting for the order to go in.  Should just be a smile extraction job."  Jack replied, but he was also worried.

Captain Sam Uliki was walking slowly down the Afghanistan town street keeping an eye out for anyone following him and watching the older couple that was just going back inside their house.  The couple had been shopping and his team was trailing them discreetly from a distance, and they took turns so as to not be detected.

His watch vibrated just as he was about to make for the small area that his team had set up as their headquarters.  He glanced down, pretending to check the time and read the message.  They were to extract the couple right away.

Sam felt the adrenaline rush throughout his body as the mission was now underway.  They were to expect hostiles at any moment and so they had to act quickly.  It had been decided that only one would approach the house and the rest would follow from a distance.  Seeing how he was closest to the house it meant that he would be the one to approach the house.

Glancing around Sam noticed a couple of his team masquerading as a couple out for the day, no one would suspect that under her garment she had an arsenal of weapons.  Sam walked calmly to the door of the house and knocked on the frame and waited.  A couple of seconds later he was greeted with a man who asked what he wanted.

"May I come inside, I have some information for you about your son Ahmed."  Sam said so that only the man could hear him.

"Ok."  He said wearily as he let Sam in.

"You must come with me right now."  Sam said as soon as the door was closed.

"Why should we?"  The man replied, clearly not trusting Sam.  The women however seemed to be looking at the man with curiosity.

"Ahmed sent you, you're his friends?"  She said to him.

"Yes, and its no longer safe for you to be here, we must move quickly to get you out of the country."  Sam explained to the couple.  Seeing their confused look he explained some more.  "We have good reason to believe that the group that your other son is involved in could mean you harm, even kill you because of what Ahmed is trying to do."

"What is he trying to do?"  The man asked.

"He is trying to save the world, sir.  And if you're in danger then it makes his mission harder."  Sam explained.  "Now we don't have much time left, we must start leaving right now."

"Let's go."  The woman said already bundled up again looking at her husband.  "This is our chance to leave like we always wanted to do."  She told him

"But we have no money!"  He said.  "What are we going to do once we leave, how will we live."

"Don't worry dear, Ahmed has probably already made arrangements for us."  She told him.  "Let's take the opportunity, we didn't last time let's not make the same mistake again."

"You're right!"  He sighed ad he turned and followed Sam out the door.

Sam radioed that they were now in transit and keep their guard up for anything unusual in the area.  Sam would feel better once they got to the base and the couple was on their way out of the country.  Then they would be able to concentrate on capturing the Skartians in the area.  Their informant, Ahmed, believed that there was at least one Skartian in the area.  Intelligence now believed that instead of just one Skartian that there were several in the command levels of the terrorists groups.

Sam shook himself of those thoughts and concentrated on the mission at hand.  Although it did not seem dangerous he did not want to be caught flat-footed, every mission had its risks.

As they rounded the corner a figure caught his eye and seemed to attract his attention.  He watched as the figure closed in on them.  Sam felt his adrenaline start pumping when the figure reached him.

The time approaches!

Sam blinked and shook his head.  When he looked back at the figure it was gone.  Had he imaged the entire thing?  He quickly scanned the area ahead of them but he did not see the person who had 'spoke' to him.  He decided that he would leave this part out of his mission report.

"We have activity in the rear."  A voice crackled over the radio and Sam had to fight the instinct to look back, knowing that if he did, the couple beside him would also look back and they would probably be spotted.

"Have they spotted the cargo?"  Sam asked and got back a negative reply, to which Sam was grateful.  He urged the couple to go just a bit faster, the danger of the mission was beginning to increase with each footstep.  The radio indicated that several men went into the house and a few seconds later they walked out looking very angry.  The men split up and went different was, obviously looking for someone.

"We have two heading your way."  The voice said over the radio.  "Transport on its way, units one and two move to intercept, use stealth measures."

Sam hear the acknowledgments form units one and two but he himself did not acknowledge for the reason as to not to attract attention to themselves.  A transport was on the way meant, that for this area a Toyota pickup was on the way.  He heard a commotion behind them and knew that the men behind them were intercepted by the shouting.

"Keep your heads down and keep moving, a pickup will be here shortly, when it arrives get in it."  He told them as now there was gunfire being heard in the streets and people ran to get out of the way.

Seconds later a pickup truck screeched to a halt a few feet from them and Sam helped the couple into the bed of the pickup and it sped away.  Sam took the opportunity to look back to see what had happened.  Units one and two were leaving the area quickly and several men were running from the couple house towards them.  One man was obviously dead in the middle of the street, the other was injured in the shoulder, but appeared that he would live.  A couple of the men shot at Sam, but the distance was already too great for an accurate shot.

They rode out of town before they changed vehicles.  Everyone in the terrorists groups would be looking for a Toyota pickup truck, but not one of their trucks.  Painted black and looking like a cross between a hummer and a speeder from Star Wars, the vehicle hovered.  The couple could only look at in awe, and the man asked what kept it up and if it was safe to ride in.

Sam just assured the couple that it was indeed safe to ride in and that it was a top-secret weapon in testing.  But because it had no wheels or tracks they could go faster than an ordinary vehicle and the ride would be much smoother on them.

They got in and quickly left the area, the pickup truck was demolished shortly after they left the area by a remote detonator that Sam had in his pocket.

"So, who exactly does my son work for?"  The man asked Sam.

"I'm not at liberty to say, but I do need to darken the windows and ask that you follow my orders, if you do everything I say, you'll find yourself in Canada in less than a day."  Sam said.

"You won't tell us then how you're going to do this."

"No sir."  Sam replied respectively.

"Let me guess, top secret, right?"

"Yes, and it would be better to everyone else that you never mention it again."  Sam told them.

"That's what I thought you would say."  The man said.  "My name's Imen."  He said extending his had.

"Captain Sam Uliki."  Sam said shaking his hand.  The rest of the trip they talked about other things like the weather and better times in Afghanistan.

Sam saw the light go on and knew that they had arrived at the base and knew that perhaps the hardest part was now at hand.  He was going to have to ask the couple to trust him completely.

"Sir, Ma'am, I going to have to ask you to put on these blindfolds for a few minutes while we transfer you from one vehicle to another."  Sam asked.

The couple looked a bit uncomfortable with the idea and finally Imen spoke.

"How do we know that you are not going to try to kill us or something?"  Imen asked him.

"You don't."  Sam replied seriously.

"Ok!"  Imen said and seemed to accept the facts and allowed the blindfold to be put on.  His wife after seeing him allow the blindfold allowed one to be put on her as well.

The couple was quickly led down several steps and along moving sidewalks and finally up another flight of stairs and then they were allow to sit down and the masks were allowed to be taken off.

Imen looked around and noticed that looked like a picture he had once seen of a first class train car of the future.  There were tables everywhere and chairs, a bar was off to one side and there appeared to be a television on the wall, but he could not imagine how it stayed there, When he got a better look he noticed that the television was only about an inch and a half thick and was hanging on the wall, not mounted into the wall.

"Is this a waiting area?"  His wife asked.

"No, this is what you'll be traveling in to Canada.  There will be a few other passengers, but the entire trip should last less than twelve hours.  The stewardesses will help you with anything you should need, and don't worry about the language barrier, everyone here will be able to communicate with you regardless of their looks."  Sam explained.   "I'm afraid that I won't be able to continue the trip with you, duty calls.  Once in Canada you will be met by a Captain Abbuc, he will get you settled in to a new life in Canada."

"Thank you!"  Imen said as they shook hands and Sam left the plane and allowed the couple to settle in for their flight.
