Legacy of the Guardians

Prolog
In a small remote part of the galaxy a barren planet slowly rotated around an ancient sun. There had been no activity in the area in millions of years. No space faring race had visited the planet in over a hundred thousand years, leaving the forces of nature to work alone on the planet. The water on the planet had long since been vaporized and the plant and animal life forms had long since died off by changes in the local star.
If one was to inspect the planet there were still some ancient ruins of cities from some sort of higher life form. Several excavations had been done, but so far no one had been able to tell what had happened to the people who had built the cities. The artifacts told the explorers that the race that had inhabited the planet was very technically advanced. After several attempts to understand what happened on the planet the other races finally gave up. It would remain one of the universe's great mysteries.
In the space above the planet a sudden, mysterious explosion occurred. In the aftermath of the explosion a ship unlike any other in the universe appeared. If the other races had seen the ship, some would have been scared while others would have no clue about it.
The ship was easily over two miles long and was a flat oblong shape. The skin of the ship was organic and a pale pink-yellow color. The outside of the ship had no obvious markings or openings that would allow anyone entrance to the ship or to help identify the ship, nor was there any signs of a propulsion system. As it moved toward the surface of the planet the skin of ship rippled like muscles underneath the skin
The mysterious ship slowly descended to a certain point on the planet. The area on the planet was an area that had intrigued many alien explorers. There was a large cylinder building surrounded by several cone shaped buildings that formed a semi-circle facing a larger building of an animal, that could only be compared to the Sphinx on Earth.
The ship touched down just on the outskirts of the structures and then just seemed to rest for a minute before a doorway appeared in the side of the hull along with a walkway. Several translucent red creatures hovered down to the planet and towards the main structure.
A bolt of energy went from one of the creatures to the building and a doorway appeared in the building. The creatures went inside the structure.
The inside of the structure was filled with technology that was millions years ahead of the most advanced race in the galaxy. Energy freely pulsated from place to place and the red beings appeared to be unconcerned about it. Computers of unimaginable power and speed started to spew out numbers that the beings studied closely.
It is time for us to completely leave, our replacements are ready. One said to the rest.
I am not sure about that, let us wait a while longer to make sure that they know that they are the ones. The second one replied.
We could help out? A third one asked.
The other races will no longer trust us, we have been gone for too long this time. The second one said.
But the darkness is coming, I can feel it growing stronger. The third one said.
It is no longer our concern, we must let the new guardians handle the darkness much like we did the first time we battle the darkness. A fourth one said.
What if they lose, then we have failed our job! The first one said.
Then they will lose, others will come to restore the balance, remember that is the way of the universe. Darkness balances the Light, Good balances Evil. The fourth one said.
But we can still help. The third one said.
No, there are too few of us to battle the Darkness anymore, its time. The fifth one said.
The rest seemed to understand what had been said and they all knew that the fifth one was right. They had been the Guardians of the galaxy for over a million years and had kept the Darkness from being to strong, but this time, a new guardian was to fight, and the galaxy was again up for grabs, the balance of the universe was at stake.
The beings climbed back aboard their ship and lifted off. Once they were back in space they targeted the planet below that had once been their homeworld. An incredible amount of energy passed from the ship and hit the planet. Within seconds the planet was vaporized and wiped from existence. The ancient sun was next followed by the remaining planets of the system. The ship then glowed brighter than a normal star and then vanished, the ancient guardians were gone.
Across the galaxy a group of beings registered the event and knew what had happened, they had been planning for this event slowly, over the last ten thousand years. Now that the guardians were gone, they could finally rule the Galaxy.
