Resistance of Memory

Urco watched as Princess Kadti walked out of her room.  The strange old women that everyone knows as Urco stood off to one side as Kadti walked by her and did not notice the old woman.  Ucro closed her eyes and sighed, she was not looking forward to what she had to do next.  She knew however that she had to do it, or else the rest of the universe would be surrounded by darkness forever.  The time to fight the darkness of the Peree was almost at hand, and time frame was very small.  Ucro knew that when she had told Kadti that she was the balance of the darkness that Kadti was confused, but Kadti needed to be taught to let go of the past.

Ucro walked to the viewing room where Kadti had walked into.  Slowing looking around the room to make sure that Kadti and her were the only ones in there.  Part of her hated what she was about to put the young woman through.

Ucro had to wait several minutes to let Kadti fall asleep before she started her task.  Ucro knew that Kadti would be an especially remarkable woman and even better Queen, her heart was open and innocent, and she would need both qualities for the upcoming task to ward off the approaching darkness.

Ucro had known that the Peree were coming, and her warnings to her own people had fallen on deaf ears.  Her people were a superstitious people who did not like those who were foreseerers like herself.  She thought that it was quite ironic that the best foreseerers came from her race, must be a joke by the universe.  She thought it was probably for the best, if their powers had been allowed to grow unchecked, there would have been no stopping them.

Ucro glanced at the sofa where Kadti was to check to see if she had fallen asleep yet.  Ucro slowly walked over to the sofa and noticed that Kadti had fallen asleep.  She took a blanket off the back of one of the other sofas and carefully laid it over the sleeping young woman.  Ucro then walked back to where she had been standing.  When she reached the spot she turned back around.

She quietly watched as another soldier walked by the room.  He did not realize that Ucro was watching him watch the young princess.  Urco knew what the soldier was thinking, the young princess was easy to fall in love with.  There was no doubt that the soldier had fallen in love with Kadti.  It was for this reason that this trial would be undertaken, she only hoped that Kadti would survive.  The princess must survive her greatest fear.

Slowly Ucro closed her eyes and concentrated on the princess.  Ucro could feel her own mind slowly slipping into a void where she would be able to cast her spell.  Her mind became more and more in touch with what the princess thought, her dreams, loves, and fears would slowly be revealed to Ucro.  This time it would concentrate on her fears, for only if Kadti got past her fears could she move on to the future.

It took Ucro a while before she was able to find the young women's fears.  But once she found Kadti's fears Ucro was not really surprised at them.  Kadti was a young woman who had a passion for life and tried to find the best in everyone around her.  That trait was what allowed her to adored by everyone around her.  That natural ability to love and love those around her was both her greatest strength and her greatest weakness.  She feared a rejection of her love from someone who loved her above everything else.

Ucro also knew that after Kadti's recent hardships that the young woman needed to find love in her heart once again.  She had lost her mother and father and just recently the young man who had asked her to marry him.  Ucro knew that Kadti was feeling hurt and pain of her heart and soul, but the universe had not given her soul mate the opportunity to meet her yet.  Ucro knew that once the two were united the universe itself would change for the better.

Kadti had to be strong for the test that she was about to undertake.  Ucro could only hope that the young woman would someday forgive her for the part she would play in uniting the two soul mates.

Ucro felt Kadti slip deeply into the spell she had weaved, now the young woman would face her fear of rejection by the ones she loved the most, her father and mother.

After a few minutes Ucro heard someone coming and she slipped into the shadows to remain hidden.

It was a young man who had walked into the room.  He seemed to be a bit startled when he realized that Kadti was sleeping in the room.  He gazed at the young princess with kindness in his eyes that even Ucro could see.  Ucro knew that he would risk his life for the young women, and that did make Ucro proud.

Ucro watched as the man quietly left the room and glanced back one last time to make sure that he did not disturb the young women.  Ucro walked back to where Kadti was sleeping and noticed that the nightmare had begun.  Ucro would now see what type of person the princess was, and who she hoped that Ucro would be.

Ucro walked back into the shadows of the room so that she would not be observed if some one came into the room.  It took a few more minutes but she could hear Kadti start to toss and turn.

Ucro saw that Kadti woke up with a start and that they young soldier from earlier returned and asked her if everything was all right.  Kadti told him that everything was all right and the man left again.  Kadti walked over to the window and watched the stars pass by.

Ucro walked out of her hiding spot and toward the princess.

"Are you alright princess?"  Ucro asked in a concerned motherly voice.

"I'm fine Ucro."  Kadti said not turning around.  "I just had a bad dream, that's all."

"Do you want to talk about it?"  Ucro asked wondering if the princess would even talk about it.

"No, nothing to concern yourself with Ucro.  I guess I just miss my parents."  She said, but Ucro could hear the slight quiver in her voice.

"I'm sure that everything will be fine Princess, there is much that you still need to learn."  Ucro said.

"I know, its hard sometimes, all these soldiers fighting and they all think that they are fighting for me."  Kadti said not really understanding it.

"The soldiers are fighting for you because you represent something from their past, and their future."  Ucro replied to her, wondering if the young woman understood.

"I guess I understand that, but I feel like they are dying because of me."  Kadti said with some sadness in her voice.

"Then that is the difference between you and the Peree."  Ucro said.  "You feel each death, that is what makes you a wonderful person that everyone looks up to, to protect.  The Peree could care less if they kill someone."

"I know, it just seems so useless sometimes Ucro."  Kadti said still looking out the window at the stars.  "I wonder sometimes what will happen as time moves on, will we win or are also to die at the hands of the Peree."

"Now you can't be thinking like that, someday you will meet the one that will change everything."  Ucro said back to her.

"But I thought that you said that I would be the one to bring balance."  Kadti said with a bit of wondering in her voice.

"I never said you would do it alone."  Ucro said as she decided to let Kadti digest that piece of information.  "Come on, let's go back to your room, we can talk more there."  Ucro said as she led the younger woman away form the window.

They walked back to Kadti's room in silence.  Kadti was thinking about her dream and Ucro was watching the young woman at her side.  Ucro could tell that the dream had disturbed Kadti more than she was willing to admit.

Kadti wondered where they were going next.  Would they have to abandon that planet as well?  Was there anything that could stop the Peree from their destructive ways?  They had conquered everything in their path with hardly a slowdown.  The rebels were only fighting a delaying action, and no real resistance.  How many more lives were they going to lose before they either lost for good or found a way to beat them?

Kadti's thought strayed to what Ucro had told her.  She was somehow the balance that would tip the scales in favor of the rebels.  She still did not know what the old woman meant by that.  Kadti knew that she could not fight, and she barely knew how to lead people.

Ucro led Kadti into her room and then told her that she was tired and was going to retire to her own quarters.  Ucro left Kadti sitting on her bed writing like the young woman had always done.

Ucro walked out of the room, but Kadti was too busy writing to notice that she did not head toward her own quarters.
