The nations of Dusion and Nolgor had been at war for over thirty years. What had really caused the war no one really could remember? The kings of each side, King Oli Sapkin of Dusion and King Ingsol of Nolgor were about to put aside their differences and form peace. The cease fire would bring peace back to the universe and allow both sides to rebuild their societies and economies.
Each year the treaty would be signed to renew it for another year. Neither nation trusted the other enough to sign a treaty lasting longer than a year. As both men made their way to the signing point another mission was underway in the heart of Nolgor space on a planet that seemed to be unimportant. It had seen better days and was now an afterthought in history books.
The large battlemech lumbered across the battlefield looking for another target. The battlemechs were to largest most sophisticated machines that humankind had ever built. Most stood over twenty feet tall and carried enough weaponry to destroy a large city by itself. Only another battlemech could destroy it.
This battlemech was on a mission. The pilot had been told that he either completes the mission or never come back. That type of order was quite unusual in that it took a long time to train a 'mech pilot with the right skills. A pilot with elite skills was never told that, at least until now.
The pilot did wonder about the mission. It did not seem like something that a pilot of his caliber would normally be on. He also wondered about his passenger, a General Adam Lester. He was known to be a specialist in charge of special secret missions. What troubled him the most was the fact that the mission was so close to the treaty deadline.
His king was about to end thirty years of fighting with their rivals. It would be the first peace that the pilot had ever known in his twenty year life. The fighting had ravished most of the resources and cities were lying in ruin. There was no longer any type of society that he could remember. The people had begun to revolt a bit against all the fighting on both sides, or so he had heard.
He would have escorted the king to the meeting but had been hand picked to come to this small world where there was nothing but ruin and destruction. He had heard in legends and myths that this planet was once very special. Looking around at the scorched landscape he wondered about it. Of course the fierce thunderstorm that had come up out of nowhere caused him to be a bit edgy.
Lightning flashed through the thick dark clouds as it lanced down towards the ground. The thunder rumbled across the landscape. So far the group had been a bit lucky in finding a few other battlemechs in their way.
"Stop," the general's voice said over the comm channel. The pilot stopped his mech and waited for further orders. "Set up a perimeter guard this won't take too long."
The pilots of the battlemechs formed the perimeter that the general ordered and waited a bit nervously for whatever was going to happen. They all figured that they would rather be in a firefight than some mission like this. They had no clear view of the enemy or what type of enemy they might face.
Glancing around he noticed that there were a few men on the ground and they appeared to be digging for something. There was nothing around this place that looked like it had anything of any value. The thunderstorm seemed to intensify with the men's digging. The storm was beginning to rattle his nerves as the lightning began to strike close to where they were standing. The pilot was not sure but he thought that the lightning was forming a ring around them.
A few more minutes and the group got the word that they were ready to head back to the drop ship. The pilot was relieved as they made their way back. The group traveled quickly in order to leave the planet and it's system as quickly as they could before the signing of the peace treaty.
The pilot was relieved when they climbed aboard the dropship and he felt it begin its ascent to the waiting starship.
General Adam Lester walked quickly to the bridge to report on his mission to the king. People allowed him to pass as he quickly walked on to the bridge and ordered a channel opened to the king. A few minutes later the king appeared on the screen.
"How was your mission general," King Oli Sapkin asked.
"It went well my liege," the general replied. "We found what we were looking for without much effort. The old myths were true," he said as he held up a metal object. "Bio scans already indicate DNA still on the metal. We should not have any trouble with the rest of the mission."
"Good," the king said with a smile on his face. "I look forward to meeting with you upon my return."
"So do I my liege," the general said then walked off the bridge leaving everyone wondering what the conversation was all about.
A large man watched from the shadows as the battlemechs formed a circle around a group of men. They were digging but he could not see much as the storm was really beginning to intensify. It was more than anything he had ever seen as well. Turning around her made his way back to his little house. The windows were blacked out so no light could be seen by outsiders.
This was not the first time a battlemech division had appeared in the area. The locals had learned to hide very well. He opened his door and closed it before opening another one that lead into the main room. Inside were two other men.
"What's going on out there Harry," one of the other men asked as the rumble of almost constant thunder shook the small house.
"There's another group of those damn battlemechs out there," Harry replied. "It seems like they are looking for something, but this storm prevents me from seeing too much."
"Let's go have a closer look," A young man said standing up. His face showed curiosity and he looked back and forth between the two other men.
"Go on ahead Harry, you and John just be careful," the other man said. "My wife said that June is doing just fine and you know that they won't let you in there."
"I know," Harry replied.
"And it will allow you not to worry about her that much. Everything will be fine and soon you will be holding your first child in your arms," the man said.
"You're right dad," Harry said. "All right come on John," he said and the two of them made their way back outside.
The thunder and lightning was still putting on a show for anyone that was watching. Harry and John were trying to figure out what the group of battlemechs and men were doing. The lightning seemed to be all around the group. Harry thought that the skies almost appeared angry at what was going on.
They watched a bit longer until the group packed up and walked away. The ground shook from both the lighting and the battlemechs walking away. Jon and Harry looked at each other and slowly walked towards the ground. There was a hole where the group had been digging but no evidence of what they were digging for.
Turning around they walked back through the storm back to the house.
"Harry, look," he heard John say over the storm and glanced up to where John was pointing.
A single beam of sunlight had pierced through the clouds and was shining directly on his house. It was the strangest thing that he had ever seen in his entire life. All around the storm still raged yet sunlight was shining on his house from a small break in the clouds.
A man came walking out of the house with an excited look on his face.
"Harry, congratulations, it a girl," he heard his father say.
"A girl," Harry said with wonder in his voice. He ran into the house and quickly into the bedroom where he saw his wife, who looked tired but well along with a small baby girl.
"We've definitely been blessed this day," Harry said quietly to himself. "She's beautiful," Harry said looking down at his daughter lying in his wife's arms. He bent down and gave her a kiss and asked how she was doing. He was relieved when he heard everyone say that she was fine and that his daughter was in good health.
King Oli Sapkin walked down the small stretch towards the table where he would meet King Ingsol to finalize a cease-fire between the two kingdoms. Oli would have sneered at the entire thing if it would not have been so serious. He knew that this had to work for now. His military needed time to build back up. He had a secret weapon that his rival did not know about.
Oli walked to the table where King Ingsol was already seated waiting for him to sit. The small man looked weak and Oli wanted nothing more than just to kill the man right now. But he would wait until his plans were fully realized.
"King Ingsol," Oli said keeping the sneer out of his voice.
"King Sapkin," came the response.
"I guess we should get this ceremony underway, I do have other things to do today," Oli said.
"Don't we both," Ingsol replied.
With a bit of fanfare they both signed the cease-fire agreement between the two nations and then poised for a picture with the two men shaking hands. Both men smiled a polite smile that was reserved and definitely not friendly.
After everything was over they parted ways.
"Ingsol, don't think that this cease-fire changes anything," Oli said.
"Of course not," Ingsol replied. The two men hated each other and even though Ingsol wished that he could concentrate on more peaceful things such as education and arts he knew that he had too keep a military eye on his neighbor.
Oli walked away knowing that he had told everyone that war would again come to the universe. What he had not said was how it would come. A real smile came to his face as he walked out of area and towards his waiting ship.
A couple of years later.
King Oli Sapkin walked into the elevator and pushed a button that allowed him to go down to the secret labs that were under the palace. The doors opened up and he walked into a reception room where there were a few guards standing at attention. They noticed him walking towards them and waited.
Oli placed his hand on a scanner and waited a few seconds until he was identified by the computer. The guards allowed their king to pass through another couple of doors. Through the doors some more guards were standing waiting for Oli to pass the eye identification. He waited as another scan was done of his eye and was identified. The guards stepped to the side and allowed him to pass.
He finally arrived at his destination where a few people were busy scurrying around with tests. Oli looked around and finally saw who he was looking for. He walked up and waited for the man to finish with his tests.
"How are they doing," the king asked the man.
"My lord, I'm sorry I didn't hear you approach," the man replied as he looked back at his results.
"I wasn't expected this time, but I find it fascinating," the king replied.
"General Lester was correct about the DNA, it was perfect," the man replied. "She is strong, smart, fast and very deadly when she has to be."
"So the mission was not a failure after all," the king asked wanting to make sure.
"She will be the right choice my lord," the man said.
"And what about the rest of the troops," the king asked wondering about the rest of the project.
"We will have several regiments of mech warriors ready to fight in about five more years," the man said. "We are already growing the third batch."
"Good, I would like to see her now," the king said.
"Of course follow me," the man said then led the king down a hallway where there were windows into other rooms. They showed the clones in various states and training, from the nursery to the training grounds where a group of what looked like ten year olds were training for warfare.
The king walked into a simulation room where he saw General Lester and the girl. She was only about ten years old but he could see that the girl was already beating him at the war game. He waited until the simulation was over and was impressed with the tactics that the girl had used.
"Very good," Oli said clapping his hands as he approached the simulator.
"My lord," Adam said turning to the king. "She is getting smarter everyday. She used a technique on the battlefield I had never seen using mechs."
"Is that so," the king said turning to look at the girl who was still studying the map of the battlefield. He noticed that her blue eyes were glancing around the field as if reviewing everything that had just happened.
"Se really is quite remarkable, and she had already beaten a group of our elite pilots in mech warfare simulations. Of course they did not know who they were facing but it was a good chance to see her skills."
"Impressive," the king replied. Soon his vision of conquering the universe would be complete.
The girl still did not say anything as she was too busy studying the last battle to see if she could have defeated her own tactics and how to defend against that. She had heard the king enter and heard him talking but did not concern herself with him. All she wanted to do was fight, it was all she knew. To her it was a game that she would always win.
A couple calmly walked through the market place looking around. They were obviously looking for something, or someone as the walked. They walked towards a stall that they knew had a bunch of sweats and other food. It was there that they would start their search.
Walking up to the stall the glanced around and noticed a small girl with blonde hair and green eyes and a wide smile on her face. In her hand was a sweat roll that she was happily munching on.
"Kara," the man said watching as the green eyes tracked to him and lit up.
"Daddy," Kara squealed as she ran over to her parents. Her mother shook her head at her child's antics and walked over to the booth.
"How much do we owe you for the roll," she asked.
"Don't bother Maria," the man said. "You're youngin had been entertaining my guests. Because of her they actually bought more because they stayed longer. Consider it a gift."
"Let me give you something," the woman replied.
The man placed his hands on her hands stilling them then looked into her eyes with a serious expression. "She brings light where ever she goes Maria. She has a gift and a purpose of that I'm sure."
Maria glanced at him then back at her daughter who was smiling in her dad's arms. Maria knew that what he was saying was true. Her daughter had an inner light about her that touched everyone around her, including them. They had found it hard to punish Kara when she did do something bad, which was not very often.
"I still wish you would quite giving her food, she'll come to expect it," Maria said to the man.
"She's great to have around," the man said. "Just remember what I said. We all know that she is destined to do great things."
"I just wish that she would not trust complete stranger though," Maria said.
"Perhaps, but perhaps that is part of her gift as well," the man said then turned back to a customer who was looking at some of the bread. "Drop by anytime Maria."
"I will," she said as she walked back over to her husband and daughter who was still munching on her roll.
"Kara what have we told you about running off," Maria said gently.
"Nwot to," came the reply from Kara who looked down at the ground.
The tone and actions that Kara did made Maria feel guilty. "Kara, I'm not mad, just concerned about you. Your father and I don't want anything bad to happen to you all right."
"Okay," Kara replied.
"Now I hear that you were telling stories again, which one was it this time," Maria said watching as her daughter's green eye lit up and began to retell the story.
Years later.
A building that had been constructed shortly after the end of the war had a bunch of people around it. Every year since the peace had started the two sides would come and reaffirm the peace between the two sides. Each side had been cautious about the peace treaty at first. After a while King Ingsol hoped that peace would reign for good. It had over a decade since he and King Sapkin had sign the first treaty.
Ingsol had been sure that Sapkin would attack shortly after the treaty. But the longer the treaty held the more hopeful the king had become about the peace. The kings had no longer come to sign the treaty for the next year and in his kingdom the day had become a day for celebrations.
The king had sent his representatives to sign the treaty like he had done every year. The two groups would look at each other then sign the treaty and go on their way.
The king's representatives sat down at the table and placed their part of the treaty on the table and waited for the other party to show up. It was not unusual for the other side to be late; they had a flair for the dramatic it seemed.
They were not expecting to hear the sounds of an explosion as the building shook from something. The men got up just when the building collapsed down around them. One of the last things they saw was a black and red leg of a battlemech come crashing through the building.
The men outside were caught by complete surprise as a group of battlemechs suddenly came from the sky. They crashed into the ground making everything shake around them. The group then opened fire destroying vehicles and equipment with precision.
It was then a large black battlemech with a red circle design on its check and legs came crashing into the building. The battlemech was of a design that no one had ever seen before. Within minutes it was a smoldering pile of ruin as the black battlemech stood in the middle of the ruins surveying the scene.
The head of the battlemech moved away as a tall woman appeared standing there. Her blue eyes surveyed the destruction as the wind whipped her long black hair around her face. A smile broke out on her face and a laugh could be heard on the wind.
"My lord," an aide said as he ran quickly to the king. The king turned and looked at the aide who appeared to be out of breath.
"What is it," the king asked suddenly fearing that it was not good news.
"The representatives at the treaty signing have been attacked my lord," the aide said watching as the king's eyes grew large at the news. This was not what he had been expecting.
"Do we know who it was who attacked us," he asked hoping that it was not King Sapkin's forces. In the back of his mind he knew that it was and only had to have a conformation to confirm his first thought.
"Reports are sketchy but there are at least a regiment of battlemechs. We are waiting to receive word from the area, but our hopes are falling," the aide said as the general of the military came up to him.
"Your Excellency I recommend that we put all of our forces on war status right now," the general said.
"We don't even know if King Sapkin's forces are behind this. It could be a rogue group trying to get us to go to war," one of King Ingsol's advisors replied.
"How much more proof do you need," the general said as the two started to argue about what to do.
"Enough," Ingsol commanded and waited until he had the attention of both of his men. "I have to agree with both of you. Put our military on yellow alert, they are to fire if they feel threatened. I will act defensively right now. We will wait and see if more information comes from our representatives."
"Of course your highness," the general said and went to carry out his king's orders. The advisor stayed behind to try and convince his king.
"King Sapkin might take this the wrong way," he said.
"Are you saying that I should allow my people to be defenseless and my military to caught off guard until its too late," the king asked looking directly into his advisors eyes.
"No no your highness," the advisor replied. "I just would wait until you have more information."
"I plan on it, but I'm also not going to wait defenseless until another attack is made. Now you have my orders," the king said watching as the advisor bowed and walked away then with a sigh knew what type of announcement he would have to make to his people.
A small out post was on alert to make sure that no ship approached the boarder without being identified. It was the first warning system that the defenses of the nearest planet had. So far there had been nothing unusual since King Ingsol had said that tensions between the two nations had become strained by the attack on the peace conference.
A scanner operator watched as he yawned from the boredom of the routine. He wondered what the point of keeping watch anyways was. If a ship did appear there really was not much that he could do about it. There were no warships in the area that could come to help in time and the defenses on the planet needed to be upgraded.
A blip suddenly appeared on the screen making the operator shiver in fear. It was a military ship and the scanner identified it as a Dusion attack craft. The operator quickly sounded the alert to the defenses of the planet. He hoped that this ship really was not there for war.
The single Dusion ship made its way towards the listening outpost. The leader on the ship already knew that the defenses on the planet had been alerted to their presence. That did not matter at all to her. The outcome would be the same regardless of the numbers of defenders.
"Destroy the outpost as we come by," came the order as the ship came flying through space. When the station was within weapons range the ship opened fire and the station was quickly destroyed. The ship barely slowed down as it continued on it path.
"All pilots ready for ground attack," the leader said as she walked over to the ship's captain. "I'll leave you in charge of the ship. If any Nolgor ship appears you have orders to attack."
"Yes general," the man said looking at the tall woman in front of him. She had the rank of general even though the woman looked like she was twenty years old. He had been told by the king himself to obey her. He watched as the walked with a purpose towards the mech bay. Years ago he would have been the one who was leading the attack but there was a new group of younger stronger and faster pilots.
He gave the order to launch the fighters and the drop ships the moment they were in orbit around the planet. The ships rushed out of the landing bay and raced toward the planet.
On board the drop ship Star looked around at her troops. She had been with many of them since they had been cloned years ago. They had grown up with her in command and looked instantly towards her for orders. She had been cloned for the specific purpose of being their commander and they would be her soldiers.
Star could feel the anticipation of the upcoming attack in her blood. It was something that she lived for and she excelled at it. Glancing up at her mech she could feel the power that it held. She had designed the mech herself for maximum power. She had even determined the color scheme and the intricate red circular pattern logo that adorned the chest and legs of the mech.
"General, one thousand feet," came the report from the pilot. Star nodded and climbed aboard her mech. With a hiss the head closed and the power systems on the mech came to life. When the report of five hundred feet came the mechs jumped out of the ship. They had jets on their legs to control how fast they landed.
Star's mech landed heavily on the ground as the defenders opened up with their weapons to try and prevent the Dusion troops from capturing them. Star and her mechs responded with a devastation fire of their own. Defensive positions exploded and a few mechs came out to challenge them.
Star looked around at the attacking mechs then activated her jump jets and launched her mech into the air. It came crashing down right on the head of the leading Nolgor mech. It exploded as the damage became too much for it to handle. Star then turned the firepower of her mech on the closest mech.
Star aimed for the legs of the mech. A few well placed shots and the mech was on the ground unable to move. With a quick shot she brought her mech's foot down on the chest of the mech watching as an internal explosion occurred in the mech killing the pilot.
The other Nolgor mech pilots were a bit stunned. Two of their comrades had just been destroyed easily right before their eyes by the black battlemech. The battle quickly became a rout as the defenders were easily destroyed with little damage to the attackers.
In the smoke filled air a single white flag rose from the besiege city. The few leaders who had survived decided to surrender to their attackers. It was clear to them that they had been defeated. They watched for the general of the leading forces as a large black mech appeared though the dust and smoke looking like and angel of death.
Star stopped a few paces away from the defeated men then opened her mech up to get out. The men standing there were not ready for what they saw. A woman no more than twenty years old jumped out of the mech and strode towards them.
"I accept your surrender," Star said as she walked calmly towards the men.
"We will only talk with your commander," the leading man said.
"I'm general Star," she replied as a pistol appeared in her hands and the man who had spoken suddenly found himself with a hole in her chest. "Anyone else want to dispute it," Star said calmly looking around finding several men shaking their heads. "Good."
Star looked around her in the glory of victory. It had been a quick and easy victory for her. The defenses had not been much of a challenge for her. The pathetic defenders should have thanked her for ending their worthless lives. She still had some work to do as there needed to be an intern government set up and then the defenses had to be rebuilt. Appointing herself as an intern government until she could find someone who could take over the position permanently.
Star figured that her first orders should be the rebuilding of the defenses. She expected a counter-attack to come from the Nolgor military once they found out what had happened.
